Intro: the Mexican Riviera with Princess Cruises
My family and I spent our 2023 Christmas vacation on the Discovery Princess cruise ship, sailing through the Mexican Riviera and using up our full drink package allocation almost every day. With a mini-suite and a balcony, our days were filled with breathtaking scenery, fun excursions, and best of all, food. I think taking a cruise is a great way to see Mexico for the first time.
Best of all, I was able to disconnect from the daily grind. I left my (multiple…) laptops at home and was able to check out completely from school and work. Being on a ship in the middle of the ocean allowed me to immerse myself and enjoy quality time with my family without any distractions.
If you are interested in planning a cruise to Mexico, this post will cover my experience with Discovery Princess and why cruising is a great way to explore the country.
If you would like to find more information about booking this cruise directly from Princess Cruise Lines, you can find it here! (Again, this post is not sponsored and contains my own opinions and experiences)

The Ship & Ship Activities
Bon voyage! We sailed away from the Los Angeles cruise ship terminal.
Because this was my first cruise, the ship looked a LOT bigger in person! I was pleasantly surprised to see that the ship was decorated for Christmas and the holiday season. The picture on the left below is the ship’s main lobby area where lots of activities happen. It is surrounded by multiple restaurants and bars, a coffee shop, and a gelato shop.
The Christmas tree was set up in this area, too! There were plenty of places for picture opportunities, especially if you had the upgraded photo package (we did not). The ship hosted an ugly sweater competition here (I opted for the less ugly kind). There is a special Bellini bar with every kind of Bellini you could imagine.
The ship has tons of areas to hang out! The 15th deck hosts the main pool area, which has: two bars; tons of hot tubs; tables and chairs; a massive TV screen where they broadcast music videos, sports, and movies; a pizza stand; a burger and chicken stand; an ice cream stand.
This area also gives you direct access to the buffet and is in close proximity to the adult pool, fitness center, and activity areas like the basketball court and walking track.
The ship hosted tons of organized activities and theme nights. There were two formal nights where you can dress your best and dance the night away!
My family chose to go to Bingo (twice), a comedy show, and a few other smaller activities. The fitness center also hosts classes.
Sea Sickness!
Sea sickness is something that is on another level on a cruise. I thought I would be fine because I normally don’t get sea sickness. However, being on a cruise ship is a different feeling. The first day was very strange because it felt super weird. The last two days were very rocky, especially at night, as there was a storm nearby.
I definitely got used to it, but I made sure to wear special sea sickness patches during our sea days. I also took chewable tablets on the more rocky days. Luckily, the Mexican Riviera cruise is less rocky than other cruises, such as the Alaskan cruise.

Food
There was definitely plenty of food and drinks on this vacation! Every guest has unlimited access to the buffet and main dining rooms, as well as most of the walk up food options and room service.
There are many upgraded food options, too. For example, you can pay anywhere from $15-$30 a person to try the other casual or formal restaurants, like the Italian restaurant or the steakhouse, when you get bored of the regular dining options. We also had a special package that included two upgraded casual dining credits.
With the drink package, you get 15 alcoholic drinks per day! Before the cruise, I had no intention of using up that amount every day. Let’s just say … it’s easier than you think. There is plenty of food and activities to keep you going with all those drinks.
Overall, the food and drinks were pretty good. And as with anything, some not so good. I enjoyed the food more in the main dining room than the buffet (see below). To be fair, I think I enjoyed the fancy coffees and alcoholic drinks better than the food!
Food Allergies
I was very nervous about going on this cruise because I have a severe legume (peanut/lentils) and nut allergy. This makes everyday life and traveling very difficult.
Luckily, I was pretty impressed with Princess because they had a notification on my account that I had a food allergy. This notifies staff members everywhere you go. The staff members were all very understanding and helpful when I notified them of my allergy. They also have a ship medical center and plenty of staff to help you at any time.
Sadly, I was disappointed with the buffet set-up. In general, buffets are very dangerous for those with food allergies, so I try to be as careful as I can if I ever go to one.
Most buffets have detailed signs that list the name of the food and any major allergens. However, on my cruise, many foods were left unlabeled and none of the labels had information about allergens. This made eating at this buffet very difficult at times.
But, as I said before, the staff was very helpful and were able to help me with my concerns. I ate at the buffet many times, but I felt more comfortable at the sit down dining options because I could more easily notify staff about my allergy.
Thankfully, I was able to walk off that ship on our last day healthy and full!
Port Cities
This was a seven day cruise that stopped in three port cities in Mexico: Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta. The ship stopped at each city for a day, and then the rest of the days on the ship were at sea.
Princess offers a huge list of organized excursions that you can register for ahead of the cruise. Excursions are great because they give you a guided tour or experience with a vetted and reputable company in the area. It makes it so much easier for you to navigate to the city without having to plan it yourself.
However, depending on the excursion, it can limit what you see in the city. Some of the more expansive walking or bus tours give you a better feel of the place, while more specific activities limit you to one location.
Cabo San Lucas
This stop was a great example of why excursions can be less stressful. The boat was too big for the port areas, so we had to take small shuttle boats from where the ship was anchored to the dock. Without an excursion, it was a free-for-all. With the excursion, we had a designated boat at a specific time to take us to the excursion meeting spot, stress free.
I really enjoyed our excursion, which was whale watching. Our boat tour was two hours long and included an open bar with snacks. On the way, the guide took us to the famous arch, “El Arco.” Throughout the tour, we saw SO many humpback whales and dolphins!
After the excursion, we had about an hour and a half left before we had to be back on the ship, so we looked around for some t-shirts before heading back.
Mazatlán
For Mazatlán, we chose the boat and bus tour, which was about 4-5 hours long. It didn’t feel that long because we had a great time!
The boat took us around the area and showed us some of the local sights, like their famous lighthouse.
Then, the bus tour took us to the famous spots like the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Malecón de Mazatlán (huge seafront promenade), and Punta de Clavadistas (cliff divers).
Puerto Vallarta
I enjoyed Puerto Vallarta more than the other two cities because it was more tropical than the other two cities.
Keep in mind that we did a beach day excursion at Las Caletas, which was a 45 minute boat ride from where the ship was parked, so we did not see much of the city. But, I really enjoyed this excursion!
There were water activities like snorkeling and kayaking, open bar (I loved their really strong margaritas and palomas!), lunch buffet, a cooking class, and other activities.
My Cruise Tips
Having recently finished my first-ever cruise, I’d like to share some valuable tips based on my personal experience exploring the Mexican Riviera with Princess Cruises. For additional information from Princess, be sure to check out their website!
- I wish I had brought more comfortable or active clothes and better prepared for the weather in the port cities. Mexico was a lot warmer in the winter months than I had expected, but I was cold when I went outside on the sea days.
- While the cruise is well-organized, I recommend carving out some ‘unscheduled’ time for yourself to fully enjoy the experience. Take advantage of non-peak hours to explore less crowded areas, such as the pool.
- Consider upgrading to a larger accommodation because the standard rooms can be quite small, especially if you’re inclined to spend more time in your room. Keep in mind that, while you can bring as many suitcases as you’d like, you’ll be living with them in your room. Fortunately, there’s storage space available under the beds.
- For those heading to Mexico, ensure your credit card allows free international purchases. When I studied abroad in Spain, I opened a new credit card specifically for my international purchases. So, I just used that on my cruise. Check out this article for some more travel safety tips!
- Plan your excursions in advance and pack accordingly to make the most of your time.
- Before disembarking, review your onboard expenses to ensure accuracy. Check out while still on the ship to address any discrepancies before you leave. Otherwise, you will have to resort to the telephone help line.
