When you start your first legal job, you’re definitely going to need to have an appropriate law office wardrobe. Of course, you will want to check with the office’s dress code. However, I believe that when you dress good, you feel good! I love having a basic “uniform” that will simplify my morning routine.
Here are some of my personal tips for creating a budget-friendly law office wardrobe. Everyone has their own personal style, but these tips will certainly help every new law student or legal employee!
Items to Add to Your Law Office Wardrobe
Amounts vary on what you prefer to wear, but here is a list of the types of things I like to keep in my law office wardrobe:
- Two-three blazers
- A few sweaters or cardigans for the chilly office
- Four pairs of comfortable dress pants
- A few pieces of simple jewelry
- One dress
- One pencil skirt
- A few casual polos and button down shirts
- A few dressy tanks or sleeveless turtle necks
- Two different styles of comfortable, everyday office shoes
I prefer pants, but a pencil skirt is great for special meetings or dressy days to the court house!
Places to Shop
Here are a few of my personal budget-friendly places to shop:
- Burlington
- Zara
- TJ Maxx
- Target
- Banana Republic (Pricy, but great for a nicer outfit set. My school even offers a student discount!)
- Thrift shops
- H&M
- Old Navy
- Express
- Forever 21 (for jewelry)
Versatility is Key, but Accent Pieces are Fun!
Find pieces that you can mix and match with neutral colors and simple jewelry. But, don’t be afraid to have fun with accent pieces to mix up your style. Budget-friendly wardrobes can be fun, too!
I love layering my outfits because in the summer; it’s hot outside and usually freezing inside. Layers are also great because I love to transform my outfit to go out with friends after work for dinner and/or drinks. Mix it up!
Comfort is Crucial!
Sitting in a desk for long hours is uncomfortable, so find things that work for your comfort, style, and office dress code. Have a mix of formal and casual, especially if you occasionally appear in court or need to do interviews. Most of your time will likely be in the office, but dress accordingly.
Make-Up is Optional, but it Completes a Look
No one should tell you whether you should wear make-up or not, but personally I think it completes a look! If you’re on a budget, sometimes make-up can dress up your outfit. Establish a make-up routine that is quick and simple. I like to keep my make-up colors neutral and subtle. A little can definitely go a long way!
