I was so clueless about what to wear for my first year in law school. Naively, I went in thinking that I would be expected to wear a full suit everyday, but I soon found out that this was far from the case. My peers came to school wearing various different things, such as sweatpants, jeans, blazers, dresses, sandals, and many more.
You will be expected to keep on top of your studies during your first year in law school, but how you dress is not a major concern (for now). The first year will be very difficult. You will be thrown into lots of reading and a new learning environment. The focus here is primarily to build foundational skills, such as legal research, writing, and analysis. You will have your head in the books during your first year, especially your first semester!
However, I found that how I dressed for school helped me focus a bit more on my studies. Instead of going to school in sweats everyday, I made it a priority to put at least a little bit of effort into my overall appearance each day (yes, including showering). When I visited professors or went to socials, I put extra effort into my appearance. On days when I was super stressed out, a fresh face of makeup and my favorite shoes made my days feel more put together.
During your first year in law school, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your sanity and personal interests for your studies. In fact, keeping your physical and mental health strong should help you achieve everything you desire during law school and beyond!
Here are some of my favorite outfits I wore during my first year in law school!
***All items in this post are from my own closet, or similar to items I own. I do not receive compensation from any of the links in this post.***
1) For a day spent researching in the law library
Researching and studying takes a lot more brain power and effort than you may realize. I find it more effective to study in a cute, warm, and comfortable outfit that puts me into a productive mood.
2) For a night out with classmates
If you’re in need of a night away from the books, this outfit is my go to. A trendy statement piece is a staple in my closet! I love a versatile jacket or coat that I can put over different layering pieces, such as a sleeveless turtleneck and leggings. This outfit works great with your favorite jewelry.
These are the exact items that I have! I was pleasantly surprised by the Shein coat.
3) For a long day of classes
Sometimes a long day of classes during your first year in law school can be overwhelming. Take it easy with a flannel, jeans, and a little sparkle.
4) For a meeting with a law school professor
I like to make sure that my professors take me seriously, so I make sure to have an outfit that shows it! Not only are they great resources for the course material (they make the tests), they are great resources for many other things regarding a career in law.
5) For a law school social event
Business casual works great for anything. Don’t be afraid of dressing up, even if it is just to class. You deserve to feel your best! I love a simple blazer with basic pieces underneath for a law school social event. Simple jewelry also goes a long way! You never know who you will meet when you put yourself out there.
6) For a cold, winter evening spent studying for finals
Moving from the desert to a place that gets regular, heavy snowfall during the winter has been difficult for me! I love simple yet cozy pieces for keeping warm (thank you Old Navy). Libraries seem to always be cold. If you’re like me and you stay late at night, you definitely need something to keep you warm for the trek back home.
